The squeeze has already claimed its first casualty in electric truck maker Lordstown Motors (RIDEQ.PK), which filed for bankruptcy in June. Companies including Lucid (LCID.O) and Nikola (NKLA.O) are likely to report another quarter of steep cash burn, as they continue to struggle with production and demand. Nikola, which reiterated a going-concern warning in May, is expected to report a 15% decline in revenue and widening losses on Friday. Its shares have rallied nearly 40% this year as the company attempts to reduce its cash burn with layoffs and the liquidation of a recently acquired battery business. But the company missed its production target in the quarter due to a parts shortage.

REUTERS/Fabian BimmerAug 3 (Reuters) - Electric truck maker Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) said on Thursday it had garnered enough support for a proposal to increase the number of shares it can issue, opening the doors to much-needed capital. To reduce cash burn, Nikola announced layoffs in June and liquidated assets of a recently acquired EV battery maker. But investors have been closely scrutinizing cash reserves at Nikola and other electric-vehicle makers worried about more share disposals to raise funds diluting their stakes. Opposing the vote vocally was Nikola's founder and top shareholder Trevor Milton, who has also called for a change in leadership. Shares of Nikola, which have soared nearly 60% this year to Thursday's close, fell 3.7% in after-hours trading.

The EV maker had filed for an initial public offering in the U.S. to list on the Nasdaq in December last year, but in May it announced plans to list through a merger with special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Black Spade Acquisition Co (BSAQ.A). VinFast and Black Spade aim to complete the merger by August, subject to shareholder approvals and other customary closing conditions, they said in a joint statement on Friday. "The declaration of the SEC effectiveness is a significant step towards the successful completion of the business combination between Black Spade and VinFast," Dennis Tam, Chairman and Co-CEO of Black Spade Acquisition Co said. Black Spade is set to hold an extraordinary shareholder meeting to approve the proposed business combination with VinFast on August 10, the joint statement said. The new merged entity was estimated by VinFast and Black Spade to have a potential equity value of $23 billion, according to their statement.

July 14 (Reuters) - Shares of Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) jumped 14% on Friday, a day after a short squeeze sent the electric-truck maker's shares soaring in their busiest trading session on record. The stock surged nearly 61% to a more than four-month high on Thursday after Nikola entered a deal to sell 50 EVs to BayoTech and purchase low-carbon hydrogen from the firm. The short squeeze in Nikola, after short sellers rushed to exit bearish bets due to a rise in the stock's price, led to a record 317 million shares traded on Thursday. For the week, Nikola shares have surged 57%. About 22.7% of Nikola shares were in short position on July 12, according to analytics firm Ortex.

The company said retail sales of its trucks doubled to 66 in the quarter, while wholesale figure rose to 45 from 31. They fell before the bell after the company announced on Monday it would start liquidating assets of Romeo Power less than a year after buying the battery maker. Nikola agreed to buy Romeo Power in August for about $144 million, as it looked to jump-start efforts to make battery packs. EV makers Tesla (TSLA.O) and Rivian (RIVN.O) also beat market estimates for second-quarter deliveries. Nikola, which went public in 2020, produced 33 trucks during the second quarter, compared with 63 trucks in the preceding quarter.

Arrival, Nikola signal more pain for EV startups

July 3 (Reuters) - Arrival SA will terminate plans to merge with a blank-check firm and Nikola Corp will offload its newly acquired battery unit, the companies said on Monday, amplifying concerns over the struggles electric vehicle (EV) startups face in building scale. Meanwhile, Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) will liquidate the assets of Romeo Power, an EV battery maker it acquired less than a year ago, to energize the business. In contrast, electric vehicle behemoth Tesla (TSLA.O) and California-based Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O) beat market estimates for second-quarter deliveries. Arrival had in April bet that the second reverse merger would release $283 million of cash held in trust before redemptions. The EV startup in May reported a 37% slump in cash and cash equivalent at the end of the first three months of the year, from the preceding quarter.

"Nikola is discontinuing its operations with Romeo Power and has commenced a proceeding under the California Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) statutory scheme," a company spokesperson said in a statement on Monday. In contrast, market leader Tesla (TSLA.O) topped market expectations for second-quarter deliveries, after price cuts and U.S. federal credits helped make its electric vehicles more affordable. Nikola said Milton's social media post "misstates the facts," adding in a statement to Reuters that the proposal to increase its share base could pass without his support. Nikola postponed a vote on the plan to July 6, after failing to secure enough support at a shareholder meeting last week. The share issue is critical for the company which, like other electric vehicle makers, is facing a cash crunch and weak demand. "The company does not need new shares, they need new leadership," he said. Nikola has been urging shareholders for weeks to vote in favor of its Proposal 2, saying "without these additional shares, Nikola's ability to continue its ongoing operations and objectives, including Nikola's need for capital, will be out of reach."

Electric-vehicle startups set to extend blistering rally

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoJune 16 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle startups from Nikola (NKLA.O) to Lordstown Motors (RIDE.O) were set on Friday to extend a blistering rally in their shares that has put the cash-strapped companies on track for hefty weekly gains. For instance Nikola, which has more than doubled in value this week, has a short interest of 15.7%, according to Refinitiv. The EV startups, meanwhile, have added over $500 million to their collective market value. Nikola shares were 20% higher before the bell on Friday at $1.65, on course to stay above the minimum level for the third straight session. Still, many challenges remain for the EV startups, evidenced by the year-to-date stock price declines of 35% and 75% seen at Nikola and Lordstown, respectively.

Electric-truck maker Nikola laying off 270 employees

Companies Nikola Corp FollowJune 16 (Reuters) - Nikola (NKLA.O) said on Friday it would lay off a total of 270 employees, as the electric-truck maker looks to cut costs and sharpen its focus on the North American marketplace. Of the 270 employees impacted, 150 were supporting Nikola's European operations and 120 were based at its sites in Phoenix and Coolidge. The decision would help Nikola reduce personnel-related cash spend by $50 million annually, the company said. Annual cash usage for the company was expected to decrease to under $400 million by 2024, Nikola added. Investors have been closely scrutinizing cash reserves at Nikola and other electric-vehicle makers amid fears slowing sales could push the companies to pursue more share disposals to raise funds.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 (Reuters) - Nikola (NKLA.O) adjourned its shareholder meeting on Wednesday after failing to garner enough support for a proposal to increase the number of shares the electric truck maker is allowed to issue, delaying its prospects of raising much-needed capital. The company, like other electric vehicle makers, has been grappling with dwindling cash and weakening demand amid fears of a recession. While some proposals require a majority of shares voted, Proposal 2 needs more than 50% of all outstanding shares in favor to pass. "More than 77% of shares voted through June 6 have been in favor of Proposal 2, but more time is needed to obtain the required vote," Nikola said in a statement, adding that the meeting will reconvene on July 6. Nikola shares have dropped about 73% this year to 59 cents as of Wednesday's close, below Nasdaq's $1 threshold.

Shares of SUV maker Fisker and truck maker Nikola Corp (NKLA.O), which reported early on Tuesday, fell 7% and 13%, respectively. Shares of Lucid, which makes luxury sedans, dropped 6% on Tuesday after its results late on Monday. Fisker lowered its annual production target to between 32,000 and 36,000 vehicles from its earlier target of 42,400 cars, blaming supply-chain issues and an "updated timing" for roadworthiness certification. The company, which started production of its Ocean SUV just in November and has $652.5 million in cash, also posted a larger-than-expected loss. For Nikola, cash burn came in at $240 million as it produced 63 vehicles.
May 9 (Reuters) - Nikola Corp (NKLA.O) on Tuesday reported a bigger quarterly loss and said it would pause production to streamline the assembly line at its Coolidge, Arizona factory amid sluggish demand for its battery-powered trucks.
